Announcement of a funded PhD position in Medical Image Analysis

Prof. Catherine Laporte, Department of Electrical Engineering, École de technologie supérieure

Prof. Catherine Laporte is seeking new and enthusiastic graduate students at the Master’s and PhD levels to take part in her group’s ultrasound image analysis research activities within the department of Electrical Engineering at École de technologie supérieure (www.etsmtl.ca).  École de technologie supérieure is the largest engineering school in the province of Quebec, Canada, and is located in downtown Montreal.

The research project pertains to the three-dimensional analysis of spinal deformities due to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, where ultrasound imaging is being considered as a safe alternative to X-ray imaging for tracking the evolution of disease.  The candidate develop new multi-modal image registration methods to update accurate 3D models of the spine previously obtained from X-ray or MR images using ultrasound data acquired during later examinations.  The projects will be conducted in collaboration with researchers at Sainte-Justine Hospital Research Center and École Polytechnique.

The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in computer science or electrical/computer/biomedical engineering, be skilled in C and/or C++ and/or MATLAB programming, have some experience with image analysis techniques and be proficient in the English language (especially written).  Preference will be given to candidates having previously worked on large computer vision or medical image analysis projects.

Interested candidates should contact Prof. Laporte directly by e-mail (catherine.laporte@etsmtl.ca) and provide their CV, transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) as well as one or two samples of their work.  These samples can be a scientific paper published, accepted or submitted for publication, a Master’s thesis, or any other scientific or technical document of which they are the primary author.

Prof. Laporte is a member of the NSERC CREATE-MIA, a university-industry training program in the area of medical image analysis. Candidates interested in joining the CREATE-MIA should state this explicitly in the application.
