Abstract

Interoperability is a requirement for the successful deployment of Electronic Health Records (EHR). EHR improves the quality of healthcare by enabling access to all relevant information at the diagnostic decision moment, regardless of location. It is a system that results from the cooperation of several heterogeneous distributed subsystems that need to successfully exchange information relative to a specific healthcare process.

To ensure interoperability, communication standards are necessary.

The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is the standard for encoding and communicating medical imaging information. It is used in radiology as well as in many other imaging domains such as ophthalmology, dentistry, and pathology. DICOM information objects are used to encode medical images or information about the images. Their usage outside of the imaging department is increasing, especially with the sharing of medical images within EHR systems.

In this workshop, we will present why DICOM is necessary for achieving interoperability in healthcare. We will use a hands on approach to introduce the encoding of DICOM Information Objects. Participants will be required to create a valid DICOM image.

Advance preparations required before the workshop

Participants should bring their laptops.  Prior to the workshop, they should make sure that they have an up-to-date version of Java installed.

They should also download and unzip the following archive:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/168338/GTS840/demo_dicom.zip

In addition, it will be necessary for OS X and Linux users to install a DICOM viewer of their choice (the archive contains a viewer, but it is Windows only).  There are several free DICOM viewers available to OS X and Linux users; here are a few recommendations to select from:

  • OsiriX Lite (OS X, the free version of the commercial OsiriX viewer)
  • ImageJ (OS X, Linux, Windows - not a full-featured viewer, but easy to install and cross-platform.  Will almost certainly do the trick for the workshop)
  • Gingko (esp. Linux, but also Windows, OS X - an advanced viewer, may be significantly more difficult to install)
